Huila, at your own pace

Stone statues carved more than a thousand years ago, the Magdalena River forcing its way through rock, towering waterfalls and trails to cover on foot, on horseback or by jeep. This guide gathers the essentials for planning; opening hours, conditions and operators change, so confirm them before you set off.

San Agustín Archaeological Park

San Agustín · ≈ 20-minute walk from the house

A World Heritage Site since 1995, described by UNESCO as the largest group of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America. Walk the Mesitas, the Fuente de Lavapatas — carved into the stone bed of a stream — and the Forest of Statues.

How to plan it

ICANH publishes opening hours, closure days and fees — check them before you go. The ticket also covers Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras, in Isnos.

Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras

Isnos

In neighbouring Isnos, Alto de los Ídolos holds seven burial mounds and at least twenty-three statues; Alto de las Piedras lies nearby. Both belong to the same World Heritage Site as the San Agustín park.

How to plan it

They are visited with the same Archaeological Park ticket. Ask the house how to combine them with the Isnos waterfalls in a single outing.

Magdalena Strait

San Agustín

The Magdalena River squeezes between volcanic rocks until its channel narrows to about 2.2 metres: water and stone at their rawest.

How to plan it

Ask the house how to get there and about the day’s conditions; admire it from the banks and follow local guidance.

Rafting on the Magdalena River

Magdalena River

Huila Travel describes stretches of varying difficulty between Mulales, the Strait, Sombrerillos and Versalles, from grade 3 to grade 5. It is demanding: pick the stretch that matches your experience, with an operator.

How to plan it

Magdalena Rafting is an independent local operator that publishes its routes, levels and requirements, such as minimum age. You can also ask the house about the rafting option.

Bordones and Mortiño waterfalls

Isnos

Two great waterfalls in neighbouring Isnos: Salto de Bordones, about 290 metres high, and Salto del Mortiño, about 170, according to Huila Travel.

How to plan it

They are for gazing at: swimming at the foot of Bordones is not possible. Ask about excursions that combine them with Alto de los Ídolos.

How to plan it
